Lou Shuman, DMD, CAGS
Lou Shuman, DMD, CAGS, is the founder and CEO of Cellerant Consulting Group. Dr. Shuman is personally known for his expertise in accelerating companies growth, emerging technologies, strategic relations, media relations, internet strategy, digital marketing methods, and operational practice management. Lou offers dental industry clients the unique perspective of being a successful orthodontist-turned-senior corporate executive, having owned and operated a high-volume multidisciplinary dental practice.
He is a venturer-in-residence at the Harvard i-lab. This relationship resulted in launching as co-founder LightForce Orthodontics in May of 2019. LightForce has created the world's first fully customized ceramic 3-D printed orthodontic bracket. The impact of the technology resulted in winning the Mass Challenge Incubator Award, being one of thirteen winners from four thousand company entries.
Dr. Shuman has a monthly national column in Dental Economics and Dental Products Report. His column in Dental Economics is "Technology in Two Minutes" and he is rebranding his Dental Products Reports column in January 2020 named "Dentistry Tomorrow".
Dr. Shuman created the Cellerant Best of Class Technology Awards in 2009 to recognize innovative products that set a standard of quality in their respective categories. It has been acknowledged as the most prestigious and coveted award that a dental manufacturer can receive. It is the only one of its kind and is covered by every major dental journal in North America before being presented at the American Dental Association’s Annual Meeting.
Prior to founding Cellerant in February 2016, Dr. Shuman served as president of Pride Institute, the prestigious dental industry practice management company (since acquired by Spear Education). Before Pride, Lou was vice president of clinical education and strategic relations at Align Technology while the company grew to exceed $500M. He created Align’s orthodontic and GP clinical programs and was the professional and clinical lead on highly successful commercial projects, including the creation of Align’s Vivera retainers. He also integrated the Invisalign® technique into orthodontic and dental school curriculums throughout North America, including at NYU, Harvard, University of Illinois at Chicago, and the University of Texas at San Antonio, as well as into associations, institutes, and organizations such as the ADA, AGD, The Scottsdale Center for Dentistry, The Pankey Institute, and The Dawson Center for Advanced Studies.
Dr. Shuman was also the founder of rdental.com, an internet-based startup that created a state-of-the-art enhanced educational interface (EEI) engine. Before joining the industry side of the dental community, Lou was the owner and operator of a 10-doctor private group practice where he specialized in adult orthodontics.
He received his DMD degree and his Certificate in Advanced Graduate Studies in Orthodontics from the Henry M. Goldman Boston University School of Dental Medicine. Giving back to the community, Dr. Shuman recreated the mission of the Walt Disney 25th Anniversary Tour at its Boston venue. He single-handedly implemented a two-day extravaganza for the underprivileged and hospitalized youth community in New England that eventually resulted in him receiving Walt Disney's most prestigious honor for “creating a new direction of purpose for their company.”
Dr. Shuman's hobbies include soccer, for which he developed a lifelong passion at a young age. He played for the US National U18 Team, was sponsored both as a player and coach by Adidas, played in Europe, and went on to create his own soccer club in Boston with seven boys and seven girls teams that won many state titles and a national title. He was a finalist as Massachusetts Coach of the Year twice. He created an inner city soccer program in DC with Adidas to provide organized soccer opportunities, which created a number of college scholarships across the country.
An avid 12-string guitar player and lover of music, he started an audio video company out of his dorm room that went nationwide while he was still a student, and has remained in the industry ever since as a consultant.
Dr. Shuman has two children, both Franklin and Marshall College graduates. One is completing a Master's program at Johns Hopkins and the other is teaching in Boston. He currently lives in Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C.
